My Woots
by Barry Scott "PapaGamer" Will
(in reverse purchase order, prices do not include Woot's standard $5 shipping charge)
- Razer Lycosa Back Lit Gaming Keyboard: $42.99 (purchased 2009-04-27)
After several "need" purchases, finally bought something just 'cos I wanted it. I kind of hate my current Logitech cheap keyboard because the INS/Home/PG UP/DEL/End/PG DN keys are in a non-standard layout and the DEL key is double-size and the INS key is missing and I am constantly accidentally deleting stuff...well, I just hate it. I love the Razer mice I've bought from Woot, so I hope this works out as well. My first Sellout.Woot purchase.
- 100 Watt Micro Slim Power Inverter - 2 Pack: $24.99 (purchased 2009-03-31)
Another need purchase. We were packing for vacation and trying to find our power inverter and my wife says, "We should just have one of these things in each car." Voila! Woot to the rescue with a two-pack of power inverters. I just hope 100W is enough to run our laptops.
- AT&T DECT 6.0 Digital 4 Handset Cordless Phone: $59.99 (purchased 2008-10-11)
So, our old 4-handset cordless phone system is on its last legs and needs to be replaced, and I'm getting ready to head to BJs Wholesale and buy a new set and look what pops up on Woot! Good timing, and the phones work very well. Too bad we've already lost one of the handsets. :sigh:
- Power Sentry 5 Outlet PowerSquid - 2 pack: $7.99 (x3) (purchased 2008-10-07)
I hate power strips. I really do. Especially with all the weirdly shaped plugs and big power bricks you have to shoehorn onto them. These PowerSquids will come in handy at home and at work, and, at less than $5 each (postage paid), they're a steal. On the other hand, Woot is going to bankrupt my PayPal account. There's been too many good deals lately.
- Philips Icon 5 Device Universal Remote: $4.99 (x3) (purchased 2008-10-06)
I do have a Logitech Harmony One; but, I don't like the kids handling that one. One of these will go in the main TV room for the kids to use. One will go upstairs for the TV/DVD in the bedroom. One will go in a drawer to be used as a spare when one of the first two gets lost. At less than $7 each (postage paid), it was impossible to resist getting three.
- Razer Diamondback Plasma Blue Gaming Mouse: $14.99 (purchased 2008-09-24)
Love my Razer Pro so much, I bought this black Diamondback at a steal. It'll go nice with my new PC (whenever I'm able to get a new PC :sigh:).
- Kingston 2GB Micro SD Card with Adapter: $5.99 (x3) (purchased 2008-07-09)
I'm always in the market for cheap memory cards and these will work anywhere a Micro or full-size SD card will work. That includes my Wii, my cell phone, my wife's cell phone...etc. Getting 3 shipped for just under $23 is a good deal.
- Sonic Impact V55 Video Player for iPod: $29.99 (purchased 2008-05-15)
I've been looking for a way to play videos in the car without resorting to the old TV/VCR-in-a-bag. I tried a DVD-player-and-LCD-monitor-in-a-bag, but the DVD player wouldn't play DVD-Rs or standard double-layer DVDs (it was really old). I tried buying a portable DVD player with LCD screen (see below), but that was a bust. I now hook my iPod 30GB 5.5g to the TV/VCR-in-a-bag, which works, but is still very bulky. Maybe this little contraption will be the answer. I certainly hope so. Update 2009-04-27: I've used this on a couple of vacations with long drive times and it works great. Fantastic little device and the kids can all see the screen clearly.
- Everglide S-500 Professional Headphones: $19.99 (x2) (purchased 2008-04-24)
Bought these to use with video cameras at work; the most attractive feature are the full earmuffs to help insulate ambient noise while trying to listen to what the cameras are recording. Update 2008-07-09: After only a couple months use, the plastic covering on one of the headbands has started flaking off. :sigh: The headphones sound good, though.
- Random Marvel Comics - 10 Pack: $0.99 (x3) (purchased 2008-04-15)
Woot! Randomly selected cheap comics for 26-1/2 cents each (including shipping). How could I not buy 30? Update 2008-05-02: Bad Woot! Bad, bad Woot! I didn't get 3 sets of 10 random comics, I got 10 random sets of 3 identical comics. Yep, they didn't even have the decency to separate the stacks of 3 comics to make it look like just random error. That will be the last time I order any random junk from Woot! Fool me twice and all that...
- Razer Barracuda AC-1 Gaming Sound Card: $69.99 (purchased 2008-01-23)
Long time, no Woot. Nothing in my price range has really interested me in a while, and I had actually gotten out of the habit of checking Woot regularly. Shame on me. I've wanted to upgrade my sound card for quite some time, but never wanted to sink a lot of money into a good one and didn't want to just buy a cheap one. (Well, I did buy a cheap one once and it was an utter failure.) This card will allow me to finally run my full 5.1 speaker kit and hopefully make Oblivion and NWN2 sound better. Too bad I can't turn the volume up or I'll wake the kiddies. Update 2008-04-15: Fantastic sound card. Really, really enhances everything--music, games, movies. I love this card; the only thing I don't love is Woot! sold it again two months later for $20 cheaper. :sigh:
- Nyko Air Flo EX USB Controller for PC/MAC – 2 Pack: $8.99 (purchased 2007-08-28)
Well, this Woot came one month too late. I had one of the original Nyko Air Flo controllers for PC and used it regularly for over two years. But, late in July, I noticed one of the shoulder buttons wasn't working. The loss of a single button can be a real problem with many games, so I searched for a replacement and decided on the Logitech ChillStream, purchased from NewEgg. :sigh: Wasted my money; but, live and learn. I wooted one pair of these as backups/controllers for multi-player gaming. At this price, they're a steal.
- iRiver AFT100 Mobile FM Transmitter - 2 pack: $17.99 (purchased 2007-07-03)
Had to get a couple spares. I've become so dependent on using these to play my iPod in the car, I would suffer withdrawal if one broke.
- Logitech PlayGear Share Audio Splitter – 2-Pack (x2): $1.99 each (purchased 2007-06-05)
You can never have too many audio adpaters and these stereo-mini Y-adapters for $1 each were too good to pass up. For some reason I stopped at 4 (two 2-packs) instead of going for 6. I guess it's because I already have two or three of these in my audio adapter junk box.
- Toshiba USB Optical Scroll Mouse - 2 pack (x3): $2.99 each (purchased 2007-05-01)
Cheap optical mice? ($13.97 for six, including shipping.) It's a no-brainer. I'll throw these in a drawer and pass them out whenever someone at work gunks up their mouse. Update 2007-08-04: I've been using one of these off-and-on for a couple of months with my laptop. They're very small and leave my hand feeling cramped after extended use. I'd recommend them for occasional use or as an emergency replacement; but, not as a permanent mouse.
- iRiver AFT100 Mobile FM Transmitter - 2 pack: $19.99 (purchased 2007-03-06)
I have a cassette adapter for playing DVD/MP3/etc. through the stereo system of our cars; but, after purchasing all those Sandisk MP3 players, I felt I couldn't pass up the chance to get an FM transmitter that can just be left in each car. These work really well in both the van (antenna in the windshield) and the car (stick antenna on the rear). I only occasionally get interference and they provide clean sound. I did have to play with the equalization, finally resorting to manually overriding the pre-configured setting I was using for the tape adapter. Still, for mobile audio to non-discerning ears, they sound great.
- SanDisk 512MB MP3/WMA Player with FM Tuner and Voice Recorder (x3): $17.99 each (purchased 2007-03-02)
Well, once my wife got a taste of the SanDisk I bought for myself in the Fall, she wanted one and we decided to get some for our two older children. I missed a bunch of Woot-Off opportunities; but, finally lucked into the exact same model for a little less money. So now my wife has one, my oldest got one for his birthday and child #2 gets his later this year. Of course, since then, my wife won an iPod Shuffle and I won a 30GB iPod; so, I don't know what we're going to do with all these SanDisks...Update 2007-08-04: Still carry one of these around and use it in my car. It fits in my pocket a lot easier than the video iPod. :) Also, having a spare or two lying around means I'm not worried if one of the boys breaks his.
- Logitech mm28 Flat Panel Portable Speakers: $24.99 (purchased 2007-01-31)
After getting my MP3 player, I thought it would be great to use on vacation to play music for the kids (especially while they're going to sleep). One little problem--no speakers. I had seen this Woot before; but, hesitated. This time, I jumped on it. The speaker is not made for pumping up the volume; but, for moderate listening it produces a very clear sound with good range. And the ingenious flip-cover and small size make it perfect for vacations. We used it extensively on a vacation in early April and it worked very well; and, it ran for the entire vacation on a single set of standard alkaline AA's. Oh, and it's like a geek magnet--anyone with the hint of geek in their blood can't resist playing with it. I used it with my laptop for a presentation at church and had more people ask about the speaker than about the presentation. Update 2007-08-04:I just need to re-iterate that this is a great little speaker. I use it all the time; just plug in my iPod and go.
- Adaptec USB2.0 4 Port PCI Card: $9.99 (purchased 2006-12-07)
Strictly a need purchase. I have 4 USB 2 ports on my motherboard and a 4-port hub and I was constantly changing out cables with all the stuff I have plugged in. This plugged in, worked without special drivers and was a very good purchase. Now I'm running out of ports again...
- Nexxtech 7" 16:9 LCD Portable DVD Player: $54.99 (purchased 2007-11-16)
I bought this to replace the DVD player-in-a-bag (with 4" screen) that we use for vacations. It was a horrible purchase. It never worked right, constantly freezing up on both pre-recorded DVDs and DVD-Rs. Finally, on the last leg of our December vacation, the screen quit working completely. It's rubbish.
- Razer Pro 1600dpi Gaming Mouse: $19.99 (purchased 2007-11-16)
It's impossible to express in mere words how much I love this mouse. I'll never be able to use an old optical mouse again.
- SanDisk 512MB MP3/WMA Player with FM Tuner and Voice Recorder: $19.99 (purchased 2006-10-12)
A whim purchase that was part of my Woot-Off fever; it turned into a very nice addition to my gadget collection. I bought it mainly because the CD player in my car is trash and I wanted something to play in the car. By downsampling songs to 64kbps WMA files, I can fit anywhere from 250 to 300 songs on this player--more than enough for a single vacation or for several months of back-and-forth driving to work. I'm not the type that walks around on a regular basis with earbuds (actually, the earbuds hurt my ears); so, as an enhancement for my car stereo, it's been great. My wife and kids liked it so much, they wanted ones too. (See above.) My main gripe with the player is the inability to go back to the beginning of a song. If you want to repeat a song, you have to skip back to the previous song and then skip forward to the song you want to play again. This means if you're using the shuffle mode, you can't go back to the beginning of a song (you skip back, then skipping forward shuffles to a different song). Oh well.
- Adaptec AVC-1400 Gamebridge USB 2.0 Adapter: $8.99 (purchased 2006-10-12)
This little device captures very good analog video on my laptop (2GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM). Since the capture is software-based, I doubt it would work as well at home on my older PC; however, it does what I want, which is to capture stuff I tape at church.
- Western Digital Caviar 250GB Hard Drive: $44.99 (purchased 2006-10-12)
After buying the hard drive case (below), I had to have a hard drive to put in it. Right? The start of a hefty round of Woot-Off fever.
- ADS USB 2.0 SimpleTouch Hard Drive Case w/Backup Software: $19.99 (purchased 2006-09-08)
I really like this case. It works well and is very quiet. The one problem I've had is when transferring large files, it sometimes locks up the entire computer. Annoying; but, not fatal. I bought it mainly as a rescue device for corrupted hard drives, not as a regular backup/file storage mechanism. For that purpose it works very well.
